What is Public Relations?

When you open any newspaper or magazine and read about a new product on the market, some hot new vacation spot or what Prince is calling himself this week that is a publicist in action. Products, designers, huge corporations, and even countries all have publicists. Publicicsts are the people hired to influence the writers about practically anything.

Bands that generate a strong buzz, release their own CD's and tour prove every day that bands can and will survive the road ahead. The publicity process for any band, no matter how big or small, is exactly the same. Of course the size of publications in which you place articles can vary dramatically (based on record sales and label status).

When you hire a publicist you are hiring a person who has established relationships with the media and who understands the protocol of how publications work and how writers like to be approached. Publicity unlike advertising is never guaranteed. A publicist will try as hard as they can to get your band written about or your CD reviewed but the only guaranteed method of getting ink in any publication is through paid advertising.
